BIOGRAPHY & CONTACTRon Pelley has been painting for most of his life. At the height of his career, he was stopped when rheumatoid arthritis struck. His hands were the first to be affected and subsequently made it impossible for him to use brushes, open paint tubes, etc. After a couple of years of severe pain, surgery, and depression, a computer was introduced. This at least allowed him to research, communicate and have a small association again with the artistic community. Because he needed to continue with his passion, he found a way to make the computer his palate and to apply painting techniques to this new medium. Everything he does is original. His pieces today closely resemble in feeling, light and subject, those he did when he worked with acrylics, watercolor and oils. His painting techniques are now applied to this new medium. The images on this site are an accumulation of over 10 years of work. Born in Newfoundland, Ron left to attend art school. He graduated with honors from The Kootenay School of Art and went on to study Philosophy and English at Notre Dame University in Nelson, B.C. Ron moved back home in 1975 and continued his passion of painting. He exhibited his paintings and has pieces in collections across Canada and the US, as well as doing various commisions. One such commission was for Parks Canada, which consisted of three large historical pieces for installation at Signal Hill Historic Park. These were the final pieces he was able to do before the arthritis struck. A quote from Ron which appeared in an article done on him in St. John's Newspaper, The Evening Telegram: “If somebody said to me today, ‘Look, you can go back to 1990. You have no more arthritis but you have to give up everything that you’ve learned, and everything that you have now', I would not trade it, because this is truly unbelievable to me. I would have never believed that a computer and this technology would save my life, along with a good rheumatologist.” Ron can be contacted by e-mail: ronpelley@nf.sympatico.ca |
